ASL 201 Video Final

Below is the video for my ASL Final and the link for the ASL Glosses translation.
I made two versions of my GLOSSES translation, one with English and then the ASL translation underneath, and the other with just the GLOSSES translation.  Glosses is a new skill that we've never learned before, so this was my first time trying to translate it.

This was a GREAT term with Professor Carl, and I very much look forward to next term and all that he will teach us.

Thanks for watching!

November 21-25th Summary

This is my weekly summary for November 21st-25th, 2011.

Tuesday - November 22nd:
In class tonight we practiced some of the skills that we've already learned, but this time with new twists.  We did two sessions of free signing, each one focusing on a different technique.
In the first session we free signed, but we were only allowed to use one hand.  This made me have to think about how to best convey my thought and the sign using only my dominant hand.  I found this exercise simple, and I noticed that it only slowed me down a little.
In the second session we free signed again, but this time we only used facial expressions, no hand movement.  This one was MUCH more difficult for me, because I felt weird using only my face to convey my thoughts.  I think in conversation that facial expressions happen naturally, so doing this exercise was strange because it made me have to THINK about what my facial expressions would be.  I think this was helpful though, because it makes me have to let go of my inhibitions about using facial expressions.
The last part of class we did picture signing to a partner that was across the room from us.  I thought it was interesting to see how each of us described the same picture differently.  Even though we described it differently, I noticed that we were still both able to understand each other and get our message across clearly.  I liked that we were a long distance apart, because it made us rely on signing alone and not mouth movement to help.
This was a great class!

Thursday - November 24th:
We had no class today because the school was closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

November 14-18 Summary

This is my weekly summary for November 14th-18th, 2011.

Tuesday - November 15th:
In this class we mostly reviewed skills we had learned in previous classes, perfecting and working on our technique.
We started the class with a free signing exercise, which now, because of daily videos and repetition in class, are becoming very comfortable and easy.
We continued with Picture Signing, which is an exercise in which we describe the photograph that Professor Carl puts on the overhead.  This time though, when we described the photograph, we were only allowed to use classifiers, not any real signs.  This FORCED me to be observant, pay attention to detail and creative in using classifiers as my main source of communication.  I really liked this exercise and believe it will be very helpful to us.
We continued class by doing the same picture signing exercise, but this time in smaller groups.  We described the photo to our classmates while Professor Carl and Erin walked around and helped us with ideas and classifier use.

Thursday - November 17th:
This class was actually cancelled because Professor Carl had a reaction to his medication and was in the hospital. :-(  I hope he is doing MUCH better by now!
About 12 of us stayed and practiced our vocabulary review as a group, with Erin leading us and helping when we didn't know the signs.  It was good practice, even if we weren't able to have regular class.

It was a very good week, in my opinion.  I look forward to next week and hope that Professor Carl is able to join us by Tuesday.

November 7-11 Summary

This is my weekly summary for November 7th-11th, 2011.
This week, in class, we practiced current skills and learned new skills to continue in our growth and acquisition of ASL.
Tuesday -November 8th:
During this class we learned a new skill called Duplicate Signing.  During this exercise, Professor Carl signed to us a Dr. Seuss Book called “Wocket in my Pocket” using hand shapes that mimicked each other.  Using hand shapes in this manner for a book that is based on rhyming is the way that ASL does Rhyme signing.  I found this exercise fascinating to learn and I was excited to try this technique at home on my own.
We also practiced a skill we had learned before called Picture Describing.  We split into groups and each of us chose a picture from a folder.  We took turns describing the pictures to each other using signs and classifiers.  This skill really is helping me build my use of classifiers during conversation and helps me notice more details in the photos.
Thursday – November 10th:
During this class we practiced the skill of Duplicate Signing, which we also now call Guide Reading.  This time Professor Carl watched while we made up some of our own Rhyming classifiers to use to tell the Dr. Seuss story.
We also practiced Vocabulary Building by splitting into groups and working with flashcards to practice signs that are in our book.  This exercise REALLY helps me build my vocabulary with new signs and remember signs that I may have forgotten.  I think this exercise in particular is very important to our development of new knowledge.

These are a couple of the photos I described to my group. :-)

November 1-4 Summary

Tuesday – November  1st:
Professor Carl was sick so we did not have class.
Thursday – November 3rd:
Professor Carl was still sick but he came to the beginning of class to explain what he wanted us to work on for the evening.  Erin walked us through the lesson and we spent the majority of the class going through the Vocabulary Building index cards from the book so we could brush up on signs we didn’t remember and learn new signs.  I am really glad that we did this exercise because it helps me keep the signs fresh in my mind and learn ones I didn’t know before.

October 24-30 Weekly Summary

This week, in class, we practiced current skills and learned new skills to continue in our growth and acquisition of ASL.

Tuesday -October 25th:
During this class we used the skill we had previously learned called "Free signing", and took it to the next level of accomplishment by changing the format.  This time, instead of all of us free signing at the same time, the class was divided into two groups.  The first group signed for 3 minutes while the second group watched, and then the roles were reversed.  After each session the group that was watching wrote their reaction for the whole class to discuss.  I think that using this skill in this new way will help us gain confidence about signing in front of other people and get used to expressing ourselves in ASL when we are nervous or outside our comfort zone.
During this class we also learned a new skill called "Copy signing".  This skill is acted out by the entire class watching a video of someone signing and copying exactly what they see, to the best of their abilities.  The purpose of this exercise is to teach us new signs and let us take in how they should be used within a story or conversation.  The purpose is not to know everything that is happening or keep up entirely, but just to take it in and learn to watch and mimic.

Thursday - October 27th:
The first exercise in this class was another copy signing video.  This time the video was Professor Carl telling us a story about 2 of the Lego people, how they studied together at the library at the Lego University.  When the library was ready to close they flickered the lights and the Lego people left.  This video was MUCH easier to follow, and this time I was even able to understand what was being signed and still was able to keep up myself.
We also did a new exercise called "Grid Practice", that we actually did a bit of last year, but the way we did it in this class was much more helpful.  We broke up into groups and each of us took turns describing in sign the location of letters or numbers to the other students, who were reading the signs and placing the same letters or numbers in the correct boxes on the grid.  This exercise helps us learn to see from the signers perspective and understand directions when given in ASL.

I very much enjoyed this week in class.  At the beginning of the week I was very frustrated and discouraged, but after a very good talk with Erin and Professor Carl I feel MUCH better and have been excited and inspired to attend class and work on my homework.

My Favorite CODA Comedian!

Last year I stumbled upon the videos of Keith Wann, who is a CODA Comedian.  CODA means Child of Deaf Adults, so that means his first language was ASL, but he is also hearing.  I LOVE watching his videos, and I laugh SO hard at his interpretations of songs especially.  I wanted to share his videos with people who read my blog because I'm SURE others will love him too.

My Video below is me explaining this post in ASL.
