November 21-25th Summary

This is my weekly summary for November 21st-25th, 2011.

Tuesday - November 22nd:
In class tonight we practiced some of the skills that we've already learned, but this time with new twists.  We did two sessions of free signing, each one focusing on a different technique.
In the first session we free signed, but we were only allowed to use one hand.  This made me have to think about how to best convey my thought and the sign using only my dominant hand.  I found this exercise simple, and I noticed that it only slowed me down a little.
In the second session we free signed again, but this time we only used facial expressions, no hand movement.  This one was MUCH more difficult for me, because I felt weird using only my face to convey my thoughts.  I think in conversation that facial expressions happen naturally, so doing this exercise was strange because it made me have to THINK about what my facial expressions would be.  I think this was helpful though, because it makes me have to let go of my inhibitions about using facial expressions.
The last part of class we did picture signing to a partner that was across the room from us.  I thought it was interesting to see how each of us described the same picture differently.  Even though we described it differently, I noticed that we were still both able to understand each other and get our message across clearly.  I liked that we were a long distance apart, because it made us rely on signing alone and not mouth movement to help.
This was a great class!

Thursday - November 24th:
We had no class today because the school was closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
